Do visit Ostrog Monastery!
Ostrog Monastery is one of the most famous holly places in Montenegro. Pilgrams of all faiths from all over the world visit this sacred place.
Ostrog Monastery is located in a cliff of a mountain range called “Ostroske grede” (the Ostrog pillars”) 900m above sea level in a cave which was used as a cell by a monk, Vasilije Jovanovic late in the 17th century.
The monastery campus “Gornji Manastir” (the Upper Monastery) consists of two small churches carved into a cave: the lower church to honor Mother’s Mary Resurrection, built in 1774 and the upper cave with a church dedicated to the Holy Cross, built in 1665, where the mummy of St. Vasilije of Ostrog is kept since he passed on 12 May 1671. He was famous as a healer and a master of miracle.
The Lower monastery Ostrog was built on a plane where a village church used to be located long ago. It was built in 1824 in honor of Holy Trinity.
