It was built by Prince Nikola in honour of fallen heroes of Montenegro and Herzegovina killed in the liberation wars against the Turks from 1875 to 1880. The project was drawn up by the Russian architect Preobraženski, while the money for construction was provided by Tsar Alexander III. The church is situated on the plateau of Petrova Glavica, in the urbanised part of Nikšić. A large, solemn staircase leads to the church.
The church has a cross-shaped foundation, at the intersection of which a polygonal dome rises up. The front of the main façade is accentuated by the belfry. Above the arched bell opening there is a clock. In the middle of the façade, there are three relief crosses. Below the biggest and central cross, situated between the two arched windows, there is an engraved inscription about the construction of the church. Lateral entrances are indented with trefoil and relief crosses. All the church’s doors and windows have a rich definition and are arch-shaped.
It is made of high-quality dressed stone and the whole building is impeccably crafted. The indentation of the façade decorations is done in a specific low secessionist style. In the spacious interior, on the lateral walls there are memorial plaques with the names of fallen soldiers and their battalions.
