The church is situated in the town’s cemetery, in the built-up part of Nikšić. It was built in the middle of an old graveyard of "stećak" standing stones. There is no reliable information on the period of its construction.
There were four distinct construction phases. Part of the walls in the lower eastern zone belong to the original, i.e. oldest church, the second phase relates to the eastern part of the church with visible traces of frescoes, while the third phase is linked to the western part of the church which is an extended naos, and finally, the most recent construction phase relates to the massive belfry constructed on the western facade.
The east part of the church with the remains of frescoes is not older than the 17th century. Additional construction on the western part was most probably completed in the first half of the 17th century, when all the church windows were broadened. An immense belfry was built in the last quarter of the 19th century. Some of the frescoes that once covered the walls in the eastern part of the church are preserved in the altar apse and only a small part in the naos.
Based on the style characteristics, it can be concluded that frescoes in this church were painted in the first part of the 18th century, or at the earliest, the end of the 17th century.
