Ostrog Monastery is located in the cliff of a mountain range called “Ostroske grede” (the Ostrog pillars) 900m above sea level in a cave which was used as a cell by a monk, Vasilije Jovanovic late in the 17th century.
The monastery is the most famous Christian sanctuary in Montenegro and is visited by members of all faiths making pilgrimages from around the whole world.
The monastery complex of “Gornji Manastir” (the Upper Monastery) consists of two small churches carved into a cave: the lower church dedicated to the Assumption of the Mother of God, built in 1774 and the upper cave with a church dedicated to the Holy Cross, built in 1665, where the preserved remains of St. Vasilije of Ostrog have been kept since he died on 12 May 1671. He was famous as a healer and a miracle worker.
The Lower Ostrog Monastery was built on a plain where a village church used to be located long ago. It was built in 1824 in honour of the Entrance of the Mother of God into the Temple.
