On the peak of Jezerski Vrh (1,660m) on the place where Rade Tomov, later known as Bishop Petar II Petrović Njegoš, built a chapel as his final resting place in 1845, an epic monument was built in 1974 – Petar II Petrović Njegoš's mausoleum. Its foundations go down as much as six metres into the mountain rock. A twenty kilometre-long road from Cetinje leads to this magnificent monument. However, in order to reach the mausoleum, an additional 461 steps need to be climbed. The chapel is the most impressive part of the mausoleum. It is an arched room with six lateral niches and one central one, constructed from the most beautiful marble from Boka and Brac. The nine metre-high vault is covered with a fascinating mosaic made of 200,000 gold-plated tiles. A majestic statue of Njegos, work of the famous sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, dominates in front of the central niche, where the sarcophagus with his remains is located. The sarcophagus reminds of the traditional Montenegrin crypts, with the state emblem and cross carved in stone, as symbols of Njegos's spiritual and secular reign. There is a simple inscription:NJEGOS 1813-1851.
