Doclea was surrounded by heavy walls with towers and the town square or forum had a monumental basilica, an arch of glory, three temples out of which was built in honour of the goddess Rome and the other one in honour of the goddess Diana. Thermal baths and other typical characteristics of Roman architecture marked the urban centre of the Roman Province of Prevalis.
At the end of the 19th century, Rovinjski and Munro were the first to start work on discovering the remains of this ancient town. Much later, from 1954 to 1964, the work continued, stopped again and resumed in 1998 finding traces of the bath and an enormous residential palace.
